A Guide to Different Tile Types

Encaustic tiles

Handmade cement tiles with richly pigmented patterns and a natural matt finish that develops over time. Tricky in wet areas and require lots of maintenance.

Zellige tiles

Traditional Clay glazed Moroccan tiles, handmade individually with subtle variations in colour. But big differences in finish and shape.

Natural stone tiles

Stone tiles are formed minerals made of solid rock, quarried directly from the earth and then cut into precise shapes. Common types : marble, limestone, slate, travertine. No two tiles are alike.

Mosaic tiling

Intricate tiling using small-format pieces to create detailed patterns, borders and feature surfaces. Another non-slip option and great for wet areas.

Original Victorian tiles

Fully rectified geometric and tessellated tiles that are actually made from porcelain. They are non-slip, frost resistant, and available in dozens of traditional colours and designs.

Bejmat tiles

Slim, rectangular North African clay terracotta tiles laid in traditional patterns, offering a warm, tactile finish with natural variations between each piece.

Ceramic tiles

Tile of choice for all types of wall tiling projects. Less durable than porcelain, so best kept out of floor areas.

Large format tiles

Best for large surface areas. Minimises grout lines and gives the full effect of the tile finish. There are limitations to where they can be installed, and requisites preparation works are essential.

Versatile, durable tiling for walls and floors, offering particularly high strength and low water absorption for demanding areas.
